Correspondence includes typed letters in German (21st century photocopies) sent by Craemer to his "Dear Minister" Wilhelm Loehe (1845-1866). Loehe was a German Lutheran who sponsored missions to convert Ojibwa Indians in the Frankenmuth (Mich.) area. The correspondence,dated Jan. 18, 1847 and July 31, 1848, mentions other church missionaries, Edward R. Baierlein and Ferdinand Sievers, the settlement and early problems of Frankenmuth, the deaths of settlers, Methodist missionaries "stealing" Ottawa Lutheran converts, Lutheran mission efforts and visits among local tribes, Bethany Lutheran Indian Mission, and early Flint (Mich.). (Parts of the translations of Craemer's correspondence are published in the book entitled, Teach My People the Truth: the Story of Frankenmuth Michigan. Also included are typed translations of two letters from Pastor Sievers, March 14, 1854 and April 24, 1855, describing his visits from Frankenlust, later called Frankenmuth, (Mich.) to Bethany Indian Mission and its missionary, Ernest G. H. Meissler. The letters describe in detail some Ojibwa converts, baptisms, visits with people, etc. (The translations of Sievers letters were copied from the book German Lutheran Bethany Indian Mission, 1851-1871, by E. R. Baierlein (1989 edition, v. 2 of 3). Originally, the letters were published in Der Lutheraner, v. 10, p. 155. and v. 11, p. 140.) Copies of all of these publications are in the Clarke Historical Library. Also included is a copy of an article called Early missions to the Native Americans by Christopher Lieske, 2005, which describes Craemer, Loehe, and Baierlein and includes portraits (copies) of Craemer and Baierlein.
